KINSALE GOURMET FESTIVAL PRESENTS:

CORK’S HOTTEST CHEFS COMPETE IN CHOWDER COOK-OFF

Get ready for a feast of seafood chowder at the ‘Cork Heat’ of the All-Ireland Chowder Cook-Off.  This hugely popular competition, sponsored by Clóna, is the opening event of the Kinsale Gourmet Festival, and is hosted by the Kinsale Good Food Circle, at Acton’s Hotel at 3pm on Friday 9 October.

Tickets cost only €5 per person (free admission on presentation of a lunch receipt on the day from a Good Food Circle restaurant), and all tickets will be entered into a draw for a €100 Good Food Circle voucher.

The winning team will represent Cork in the All Ireland Chowder Cook-Off next April, so the stakes are high, and the competition to produce the most mouth-watering chowder will be lively.  This guarantees a tasty and varied feast of seafood chowder for the ticket holders, who are encouraged to sample all the chowders, and vote for their favourite.

Will the winner be a bowl of creamy chowder with a lobster-based stock, or a spicy concoction featuring tomato and chilli?  Will the chowder showcase smoked fish, mussels, or a subtle blend of white fish, veggies and cream garnished with scallops? Anything is possible as daring and imaginative chefs vie to impress! Some chowder chefs offer seaweed scones or home-made brown bread on the side, or a shot of something alcoholic to add a kick.  This year, there will also be craft beer tastings from Blacks of Kinsale so take an afternoon off, arrange to meet the gang, have a load of fun, and help to decide which chef will represent Cork at the 6th All Ireland Chowder Cook Off in Kinsale in 2016.

Last year’s winners, the team from Cork City’s Cornstore Restaurant, are returning to defend their title, and will face serious competition from Budds RestaurantBallydehob,The Rising Tide, Glounthaune, The Fish Bar at Electric, Cork City, Bastion of Kinsale, The Pink Elephant, Kilbrittain, The White Horse, Ballincollig,  Richy’s Restaurant, Clonakilty,Poachers Inn, Bandon, Pier 26 Restaurant, Ballycotton, Celtic Ross Hotel, Rosscarbery,Quinlans Seafood Bar, Cork City, Nine Market St, Kinsale and The Speckled Door, Old Head.

The winner will represent Cork at the All-Ireland Chowder Cook-Off in Kinsale next April, and subsequently travel to Newport, Rhode Island to be part of the Great Chowder Cook-off in June, 2017.
